Homeland Security efforts in Shenzhen, China
Huanggang, Shenzhen, China, March 2008. China is becoming the largest homeland security market in the world, a projected $33-billion internal industry that has been thoughtfully fueled by multiple American technology companies. With some 200,000 surveillance cameras already installed throughout the city and 2 million more to come before 2010, Shenzhen, China's youngest city, chosen by Deng Xiaopeng as the first "Special Economic Zone" (SEZ) to experiment capitalism, is at the forefront of the movement. This series, titled "Shenzhen: Special Surveillance Zone (SSZ)," is part of an on-going, long-term project depicting the prevailing surveillance state of the globe.
